This book consists mainly of a magnificent collection of drawings prepared by Jean-Pierre Greenlaw over a period of twenty years. They provide a conspectus of Turkish architecture in the famous but now abandoned port of Suakin on the Red Sea. The drawings are supplemented by text giving an outline of the history of Arab and Turkish architecture, and of the port of Suakin onder Turkish rule and subsequently onder British rule, with accounts of the buildings erected for Gordon and Kitchener. A majer contribution to the history of Islamic architecture, it is especially interesting because it gives a wealth of detail about the intimate domestic arrangements of houses as well as providing records of general planning and design in accurate drawings of superb craftsmanship. This is one of those rare books which is the life-work of a dedicated scholar in his field of study.
